Challenge:
Rapidly expanding demand meant Nestle Purina continuing to invest heavily in expansion of their pet food manufacturing operations in Russia. Although first production started as recently as 2007 within only a few years the original on-site equipment cleaning capabilities were no longer able to fulfil ongoing and future needs.
New capability needed to be able to service the cleaning needs of several destination circuits including day tank for slurry feeding multiple extruders as well as storage tanks for digest material. Crucially it needed to manage the risks associated with bone within the product which can clog and damage pumps and other critical equipment.
Solution:
~~Based on the Nestle’s previous experience working with Martec at their Sudbury site collaborative learning was carried forward for this application. The design was based on a state-of-the-art 3 tank, steam sparge CIP set with an integral bone filter.
To reduce CIP soil load and increase changeover efficiency two product recovery (pigging) systems were incorporated within the overall system design.
Flexible detergent addition options were involved. Dosing with acid (PAA) as well as caustic was made feasible to manage inorganic as well as organic material.
Once installed Martec specialists flew to Russia and commissioned the system within the tight timeframe required. While on-site additional guidance was provided in overcoming concerns with scavenge pumps, spray balls and lobe pumps.
Benefits:
~~The Martec supplied technology supports the continued rapid expansion of The Nestle Vorsino facilities to now cover production of both wet and dry products..
